Advent at Longview Nazarene

In a day and age when we rush from the bounty of Thanksgiving to the frenetic pace of the Christmas season, we take the time to pause, reflect and allow God to prepare our hearts to again receive the light of the world Jesus Christ.  Advent is the season we slow down so that we might truly consider what it means to celebrate the 'word made flesh' in Jesus Christ.  Here at LCN we have tried to plan activities that allow time and space to prepare our hearts to receive anew, the Christ Child we celebrate on Christmas Day.

Advent Activities

  • All Church Sunday school

This year, we will combine all our Sunday school classes so that we might consider and study the advent texts together.  First we will study the scripture and then we will engage in an all age activity.  Bring your whole family, this is a time you will not want to miss! We will be having all church Sunday school on the 4 Sundays of Advent (Dec. 1,8,15 and 22).

  • Hanging of the Greens Service (Dec. 1 @ 10:30am)

Ever wondered why we use evergreens during the season of CHierstmas?  Ever thought about where the legend of Santa Clause came from?  Most of the symbols of Christmas have roots deep in the story of Jesus Christ.  Join us for this fun and interactive service where we learn more about the 'why' of our traditional Christmas celebrations!

  • Advent Prayer Stations

Advent is intended as a season of reflection and preparation.  We will have a prayer room with interactive stations set up for any who would like to come and spend time in prayer and preparation.  The Prayer stations will be open Dec. 15-2.  The operating times will be: M-Thu 9am-3:30pm and Fri 9am- 12pm.  You may call the church office to reserve a time slot or drop in any time the prayer stations are open.

  • Christmas Eve Service

This year, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ with a service of carols and communion.  We will tell the story of Jesus, the light who has come into the world, through scripture and music and will culminate by receiving communion together.  The service begins at 6:00pm and is followed by a time of sharing cookies, coffee and cocoa together.

  • Advent Resources

This year we are using the Illustrated Children's Ministry "A Light in the Darkness".  These are a series of advent devotionals and activities for families to explore together.  Available at the Family Ministries connection board in the fellowship hall of the church.  For more info contact Pastor Katy.
